In May 2020, the pandemic was already wreaking havoc on Ottawa chef Joe Thottungal’s livelihood when fate cruelly put another obstacle in his way. The east end restaurant he had owned for more than 15 years, Coconut Lagoon, was severely damaged by fire, dealing a severe blow to Thottungal at a time when the outlook for his industry was already bleak.
